Winter Construction Company is owned and operated by John Winter, whose family has lived in the area for generations. John Winter grew up in Kingfield, where it was normal for him to run through streets and ski down trails named after his family members. His path to becoming a builder here was anything but direct: thru-hiking the Appalachian Trail, managing off-grid huts, timber framing, and early mornings baking bagels all came first, long before he ever set foot on a job site.

The first general contractor he worked for gave him a task, the tools to complete it, and the freedom to figure things out on his own. So John taught himself, studying late into the night to be ready for the next morning, set on doing the work right the first time. He put every early paycheck back into his own tools. Tile became his specialty, a craft few in the area had mastered and one that kept him working comfortably through Maine's long winters. He continued learning, growing, and gaining hands-on experience at each job site, and within two years, he was running jobs of his own.
